Frequently Asked Questions

Straightforward answers about the mediation process

Mediation is a voluntary, private process where a neutral attorney helps you and your spouse reach an agreement — without going to court. It’s ideal for couples who want to handle their divorce with less stress, more control, and a lot less cost.

Neither of you. A mediator is a neutral guide — not a lawyer for either party. Their job is to help both sides communicate, identify priorities, and reach a fair, lasting agreement.

That’s up to you. Most of our clients don’t hire separate attorneys. Mediation is designed to help both spouses reach an agreement together. But if you want a lawyer to review your final documents before filing, we support that.

In most cases, no court appearance is necessary. We help you finalize everything outside of court. In the rare case where a hearing is needed, we’ll walk you through it — but we do not represent clients in court or attend hearings.

Mediation is almost always more affordable than a traditional divorce — no costly retainers, no surprise bills, and no need to hire two separate attorneys.

Unlike many mediators who bill by the hour, we offer flat-rate pricing. That means one clear price for the full process — no clock-watching, no hidden fees, and no stress about how long each session takes.

Yes. We work with many people who start the process alone. We’ll provide resources and help you explore your options — whether or not your spouse is on board yet.

A separation is when you and your spouse live apart, but remain legally married. A divorce ends the marriage completely. In Maryland, you can now file for divorce without being separated for 12 months, depending on your situation.

Most couples complete the mediation process and file for divorce within 2–4 months. Some finish faster with our Mutual Consent Divorce package, which includes everything you need in one flat-fee bundle.

No. Maryland no longer requires a 12-month separation. You may qualify for divorce based on mutual consent — which simply means you both agree to the terms.
