Frequently Asked Questions

Straightforward answers about the mediation process

Mediation is a voluntary, private process where a neutral attorney helps you and your spouse reach an agreement — without going to court. It’s ideal for couples who want to handle their divorce with less stress, more control, and a lot less cost.

For more details check out our in depth guide here: What Is Divorce Mediation?

Neither of you.  Our only goal is assisting to reach an efficient and fair resolution. A mediator is a neutral guide — not a lawyer for either party. Their job is to help both sides communicate, identify priorities, and reach a fair, lasting agreement.

That’s up to you. Most of our clients don’t hire separate attorneys but many do.  We serve as neutral guides to help you understand the process and before you sign anything you should feel 100% comfortable.  For some, reaching 100% comfort means hiring an independent attorney to help review the agreement before its final.

To obtain a final “Absolute Divorce” you must get a judge’s approval – so, yes, a court action is necessary.  However, as part of our Mediation process we’ll help you expedite your final divorce and get a remote Zoom hearing scheduled — and we’ll give you the script so you’ll know what to say!

Mediation is almost always more affordable than a traditional divorce — no costly retainers, no surprise bills, and no need to hire two separate attorneys.

Unlike many mediators who bill by the hour, we offer flat-rate pricing. That means one clear price for the full process — no clock-watching, no hidden fees, and no stress about how long each session takes.

Yes. One of the best parts of mediation is that you control your destiny.  Mediation offers both sides the chance to be heard on EVERY issue, even the decision to separate or get divorced.

There are plenty of outcomes that do NOT result in a final divorce being issued right away.  Sitting down with a skilled mediator is a great way to work through any challenge.

A separation is when you and your spouse live apart, but remain legally married.  It’s an arrangement or agreement between a husband a wife only.  Your separation can be temporary or permanent and is private — there is no public record.

A divorce is the final legal (and public) recognization that your marital relationship is over.  In Maryland, only a Judge can issue a divorce.

With our Mutual Consent Divorce package, from sign up to signing your separation agreement:

  • 3-5 weeks for couples already living apart and with no children.
  • 4-8 weeks for couples who have children or are still living together.

These timeframes are average — many couples decide to wait on some event before completing the process.

No. Maryland no longer requires a 12-month separation. You may qualify for divorce based on mutual consent — both parties AGREE to be divorced and have a signed settlement agreement.
