The Anatomy of Divorce – Part One
This is part 1 of a 3 part series.
Divorce has three stages:
Deciding on Divorce, Negotiating a Separation, and the Divorce with a Capital D.
Deciding on Divorce
First, couples must come to the conclusion to get a divorce. For many couples, this stage takes months if not years. In many cases, one spouse has decided on a divorce well before the other spouse.
We encourage couples to engage in marriage counseling or, if possible, one-on-one conversations to discuss whether a successful marriage can be salvaged from a strained one. A great place to start if you’re having marriage difficulties is a marriage and family counselor or your clergy.
Unfortunately, 46% of marriages in America do not last and a separation and divorce is inevitable.
At Maryland Divorce Mediators, we will never encourage divorce or “sell you” on why divorce is best for you. Couples who are good candidates for a successful mediation have already reached the tough decision, together, that divorce is the most appropriate outcome for both parties and especially the children.
